Since
1974, GKCF has established six kindergartens and two habilitation
centers situated within or near Palestinian camps in Lebanon. We can
receive around 825 children in our daily program. In three kindergartens
we run a double shift program.
Over the years we have included children with moderate
disabilities in our regular kindergartens. In 1994, we started a program
for the integration of a small group of blind children with other
children. In July 1996, we inaugurated our first library and art center
for children aged 6 to 18 years, including a special project for the
activation of street kids. In 1999 the foundation built its second library.
More than 7,000 children have 'graduated' from GKCF's
kindergartens since 1974. Many of them are now school children and same
have already become university " students, teachers, workers and
parents.

GKCF has several new projects in Nahr Al Bared and Burj Al
Barajneh refugee camps.
The
Baddawi Project – A Children’s library and Art Workshop
The Baddawi kindergarten is
one of GKCF’s first projects. It was built in 1975 and has the
capacity to care for 150 children. On the top floor of the kindergarten,
the foundation plans to establish a new section, which will house a
children’s library and an art workshop. The estimated cost for this
project is about 320.000, -
Danish crowns. We are hoping to receive the sufficient economic support,
which will enable us to start the construction process this year.
The Burj Al Barajneh project – Residents and Cultural centre
For a number of years, the GKCF
has had the intension of starting a new project near the Al
Barajneh refugee camp. In 1981, a 1266 sq. m. piece of land located next
to
Beirut
’s
international airport was donated to the foundation by a well known
Lebanese family. The foundation is planning to establish a residents
/ cultural
centre for
the people of the vicinity, Palestinians, Lebanese, as well as other
nationalities.
This new project will
include a large kindergarten and a special centre for mentally disabled
children. The estimated cost for this part of the project is 2.700.000,
- Danish crowns. At a later stage, we are planning to build an
additional level, which will house the library and art workshop for the
older children (6-16 years) in addition to some other facilities that
can benefit the area’s residents.
This important and necessary project has been put on hold because of the
war and the insufficient economic funding. However, with the help and
support from the international non-governmental organizations, NGO’s,
as well as the friends of Ghassan Kanafani and the foundation, we are
optimistic about being able to achieve our goals and realize our
plans.
